Putin shook hands with the former German chancellor during the inauguration ceremony

Putin went down to shake hands with the top three people after taking the oath of office.

Russian President Putin only shook hands with three people at Andereevsky Hall after being sworn in on May 7, including Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and former German Prime Minister Gerhard Schroder

It was a very remarkable moment.

According to the Washington Post, Schroder’s standing position shows the depth of the relationship between Putin and the former leader who can be considered his most important foreign friend.

`This is a message that those who have a positive opinion of the Kremlin will be appreciated by Russia,` said former Kremlin adviser Alexey Chesnakov.

Schroder took office in 1998, just over a year before Putin, and quickly became close to Putin at international summits, where the Russian President is often the only world leader who speaks German.

Schroder also lobbied for Nord Stream 2, a new pipeline that some analysts say will boost Russia’s ability to use energy for political leverage in Europe.

Putin has long wanted to build closer relations with Germany.

Another close German friend of Putin also present at the inauguration was Matthias Warnig, an East German secret police officer who worked in Dresden in the final years of the Cold War.

Schroder’s appearance this year has caused many people to criticize.

Schroder’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
