Born in 1985 in Rhode Island, Damien Chazelle has a mother who is a writer and a professor of history at the University of New Jersey, and a father who is a professor of information technology at Princeton University (USA).

Breakthrough with first film Whiplash

Damien Chazelle entered the film industry with the film Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench.

In 2013, Damien Chazelle participated in two commercial projects, Grand Piano and The Last Exorcism Part II as a screenwriter.

To prepare for the long film project, Damien Chazelle decided to make the short film Whiplash to `show off`.

The character Terrence Fletcher in the film was inspired by the harsh teacher when Damien studied drums in high school.

Initially, Whiplash only had a limited release in Canada and the US, but due to good word-of-mouth and positive response from critics, the film gradually expanded to 500 theaters and grossed more than 33 million USD – 10 times its budget.

The opportunity to be the youngest director to win an Oscar

Thanks to Whiplash, the unknown Damien suddenly became the spotlight in Hollywood.

The work takes Los Angeles as the `city of stars` setting, telling a bitter-sweet love story with the actors.

La La Land has a simple plot with classic Hollywood colors.

Making millions of audiences around the world sob, La La Land was also included in the list of best movies of 2016 by many film websites right after its release.

Up to now, American filmmaker – Norman Taurog – holds the title of `The youngest director to ever win an Oscar`.

After La La Land, the director born in 1985 continued to collaborate with actor Ryan Gosling in a project called First Man, about Neil Armstrong – the first man to set foot on the Moon.

Damien Chazelle once had a beautiful love with film producer Jasmine McGlade – who is the same age as him.

After the divorce, the two still remained friends.
