The Southern Theater Command, the unit in charge of operations in the East Sea, will deploy forces on an unprecedented scale, including amphibious ships, helicopters, air-cushioned landing craft and marines.

According to sources, the hypothetical target of the exercise is the Dong Sa archipelago, located in the northeast of the East Sea, currently controlled by Taiwan’s defense forces.

The Chinese military has not commented on this information, nor has it announced plans for exercises near Hainan Island in August. However, the Global Times newspaper belongs to People’s Daily, the mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party,

Taiwan’s Self-Defense Forces are currently deploying forces to protect a small airport on the Dongsha Islands.

General Lin Wen-huang, head of the planning and operations office of Taiwan’s defense agency, said they were monitoring every move of `hostile forces` and had prepared contingency plans, as well as

US electronic reconnaissance aircraft appeared 13 times in April alone near the Dongsha Islands to collect data on the Chinese military.

China rarely publicly mentions the Dong Sa archipelago issue.

China considers Taiwan a part of its territory awaiting reunification, including by force if necessary.

The Dongsha Islands are located 340 km from Hong Kong and 850 km from Taipei, and are placed within the administrative jurisdiction of Kaohsiung city by the Taiwanese government, while China claims sovereignty and places it in Guangzhou province.
