A report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on July 17 said that drug gangs in East and Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Bangladesh reaped valuable profits.

Jeremy Douglas, UNODC representative in the Southeast Asia and Pacific region, called on governments in the above regions to be clearly aware of the `scale and importance` of the problem, otherwise the situation will become increasingly worse.

`This area is being used, even abused, by organized crime to trade drugs. It is not wrong to say it is becoming a playground for criminals,` Douglas warned.

Thai border guards late last month discovered a cave filled with drugs deep in the jungle in Chiang Mai province, in the north of the country.

In 2018, authorities seized a record amount of 120 tons of crystal meth and pills in the Asia-Pacific region.

Experts say the drug crime explosion is a consequence of many factors.

`The drug menace is gradually corroding our society, destroying the lives of young people, destroying the dignity and future of the country,` President U Win Myint declared on Myanmar television on June 27.

New highway projects and bridges built in Southeast Asia to serve trade are turned by drug smugglers into ideal routes for importing and exporting drugs.

UNODC assesses that Southeast Asia has become `the world’s largest and most vibrant meth market` and calls this something unimaginable a decade ago.
